If you follow me on twitter you will already know this, but if not.....the place I work full time has closed down and me and all my colleagues have been made redundant. This is such sad news as I've only been working there for one month full time, but well over four/five years on and off.
I first started working with Muji as a part time Christmas temp, then as a regular part time member of staff, and most recently as a full time member of staff - but now I've been made redundant. I was really enjoying my job, the people, the place and the products we sold were all great, now after only just making the decision to go back to full time work I'm forced to look for more full time work.
Losing my job has really had me think about the direction I want to go in now, so soon after I had just made my mind up to work full time. I'm still working on everything Mr Yen, such as working on the re-branding/relaunch which I've scheduled for this August, and I'm still available for commissions and designing papercuts, but I would still love the security of a full time job at the moment and have decided to look into getting a job with a local design agency in Leeds.
Over the last few days I've received the most amazing support over on twitter and facebook, with a few emails of support from people too, which I think this is amazing! It really has helped hearing your comments of support and I've appreciated each one so much.
I would just like to say a huge thank you and I hope I can be there to support you when/if you need it too!

If you would like to hire me for design work in Leeds, or you would like to commission me to create some paper cuts for you, I would love to connect with you and see what we can create together!

Oh Jonathon, I am so sorry to hear this. I don't do Twitter much so had missed out. I don't know what to say, what a kick in the teeth. Anything I can do to help.
I am running a series of artist features on my blog now and would love to include you. If you are up for it, I will send you some questions? I just need your email address
Best wishes
Lorrie

This really struck a chord with me as my colleagues and I were also made redundant as of two weeks ago. It has also really made me think about where I want to take my career and have likewise applied for several local graphic design agencies in the hope of gaining full time work alongside my own design projects. Good luck to you and hopefully it's a case of one door closing and another one opening!
All the best,
Tash @ Iris Art Designs
Thanks Lorrie, I would love to be included - you can find my email address here - http://mr-yen.com/index.php?/information/contact/
Hi Tash, I'm so sorry to hear that you're going through this too - I hope you find something soon. I always think things happen for a reason so we must be destined for better things, it just doesn't seem that way right now. If there's anything I can do to help, just let me know!
The same thing happened to me just over a month ago and after the initial shock, I really think it's really for the best. The end result might end up being the same, you're just taking a slightly different route than planned. I'm sure some great opportunities are right around the corner for you! Good luck!
Sorry to hear the news, it's such an irritant when your safety net gets pulled out from under you, because all of a sudden you lose the urge to create because you have to spend 100% of the time looking for a new job! I've been in this exact same position more times than I care to remember over the last few years. Something else will hopefully come soon, and I only hope you don't have to do something as mind-numbing as I'm doing at the moment. Though, having said that, the work is so dull that I can doodle and draw for most of my shift, so everything has a silver lining. It certainly isn't the wage! ;-)
Sorry your plans have gone awry. I hope it turns out to be the best thing that could have happened - with a brilliant result in the end! Still, right now I'm sure it doesn't feel very brilliant; keep smiling, keep applying for work, don't give up - and also keep making great papercuts!
Hello and hello Mr Yen,
Your work is beautiful and magical.
I worked for a Fortune 500 Company for 17 years - in Finance and my entire department 60 people - jobs went to India. I got to train 2 people that replaced me.
Then I opened my own website, oh my, it took me 2 months to figure out and get it set up. After that I set up a shop on ETSY, it is for Artisans...they did not pay me to say that.
I am glad I took a chance on my own business in Art. Most of the jobs in Finance near me had dried up.
I know you can make a living from your beautiful works and would be glad to give you any information or help I can - no fee as Artists should help other artists.
For the love of paper - let me know anything you need,
Petrina Case Studio
Sorry to hear about losing your full time job, but I completely agree with the quote you have above. You have the power to make your own success and happiness in any circumstance! Never give up...good luck with everything x
I'm so sorry to hear of your job loss, Jonathan. Given the precarious state of things these days, I think we're all especially sympathetic to what a loss it truly is. So, I feel for you immeasurably.
However, you are uber talented and, as it would seem, an all around great chap and I have very confidence that things will come 'round for you sooner than later. That is my wish and prayer for you, Mr.
Be well. And, we're all thinking good thoughts for you!
Hi Sarah,
